A Vision in Cream

There’s modern design that shouts its presence, and then there’s modern that murmurs. The latter holds sway in the dreamy guest bathroom at Chestnut Hall, a Brevard-area home.

Situated in the middle of the upper floor in a house with mountain topography, the guest bath might have ended up on the dark side. But the outdoors is invited in via a vast skylight, calming the angular space and giving it an almost celestial appearance, as well as drenching it in ongoing natural light.

The walls and ceiling, painted in Sherwin-Williams’ “Creamy,” feature horizontal wooden planks, appearing in an almost roof-like cornice above the bathtub. That unexpected triangular feature gives this corner of the bathroom a visual uptick of authority: The simple white shower curtain thus appears almost like a theater curtain. Throughout the space, the planking is cut and arranged in irregular sizes, furthering the memorable artisanal beauty.

Countertops of Calacatta marble pick up the variegated color pattern of the same-material floor. The glazed ceramic tile in the bath comes from WNC Tile, and the Kohler sink and tub are fitted with fixtures from Newport Brass. Thom Kline of Pisgah Forest built the custom cabinetry.

There’s such a thing as too much white, but it doesn’t happen here. A wooden-framed mirror in a chestnut hue adds a forest-y touch, and rosy side lighting stirs up the cream. It’s a space that manages to be at once architecturally interesting and the ultimate picture of serenity.
