One often thinks of a renovation as an “updating” — exchanging more traditional styling for sleek, modern furnishings. In the case of this Flat Rock kitchen, it’s almost the reverse. The former homeowners had installed modernistic Poggenpohl cabinetry from Germany: very contemporary. But the new homeowners longed for a warmer, more relaxed sensibility that was in keeping with the environs.
Kris Atwood of Atwood Fine Architectural Cabinetry, who handled the design/build on the project, provided just the right flavor of easy country elegance. The existing ceiling was removed to create a vaulted, tongue-in-groove roofline, and the flooring was covered with 6-inch wide-plank cherry with a low-gloss finish. Laminated cabinetry was replaced with unceremonious Wood-Mode knotty-cherry cabinets in a natural finish, black-glazed and accented with leathered granite counter tops.
Two capacious, farm-style sinks grace the room — one at the new pass-through that opens into a breakfast bar in the great room, and one that overlooks the mountain view — and an expansive center island offer versatility. An attached butler’s pantry provides additional prep and storage space.
Far from being old-fashioned, the kitchen is outfitted with top-of-the-line Thermador appliances and features a drop-down television set above a side counter, which disappears behind the cabinetry when not in use. Plug strips for power and LED lighting are cleverly concealed beneath the cabinets to maintain an unencumbered backsplash. The overall effect is organized and efficient, yet totally inviting.
Talk about back to the future.
