Impressions of Resilience

Asheville printmakers move to higher ground
Print House is rising from the floodwaters.

After seven years of inky experiments and clattering presses in the River Arts District, printmakers Denise Markbreit and Anna Bryant are starting fresh — this time, on higher ground. Their former venue, Asheville Print Studio + Gallery, was devastated during Hurricane Helene, leaving only salvaged presses and a deep well of determination. From that loss comes Print House on Carolina Lane in downtown Asheville. “There has been so much hard work to get to this point — so much in the shadows that folks wouldn’t know about,” says Markbreit. “We both feel so proud of our accomplishments thus far and for having the resilience and persistence to get to this point.” The new space will serve as a working printmaking studio and gallery representing original works by artists Markbreit and Bryant, along with curated and rotating guest artist exhibitions. Upstairs, a dedicated learning center will offer workshops in linocut, solar plate, cyanotype, and other techniques. “We hope to become a destination for print lovers residing in and visiting Asheville who enjoy, collect, and want to learn the art of printmaking,” says Markbreit.
