Make Room for Rustic

Rustic-chic is absolutely everywhere — from the trendy corrugated metal that surrounds so many patios to the bale twine securing every bridal bouquet. But the farmhouse kitchen in the stately Lake Adger property of Charlie and Eleanor Gould (in rural Mill Spring, near Tryon) shows a dedication rarely seen on the average Pinterest page.

The cabinetry, flooring, and mosaic tile backsplash were sourced from the extensive showroom Factory Direct Cabinets in Hendersonville. The custom gray Shaker cabinets feature beadboard fronts and set a tone echoed throughout the home. Key pieces of furniture in the living and dining room come from Foothills Amish Furniture in Landrum, SC, and Mr. Gould himself painted and distressed the custom hood range with milk paint, a formula used by the early American colonists and Shakers.

According to the Goulds, “Jim Ayers of New Pointe Builders was a great contractor to work with, and [interior designer] Lynne Greenawalt was so helpful in translating our ideas into reality with her creative suggestions.”

Silestone countertops from RockStar Marble & Granite, plus what Greenawalt describes as “the liberal use of wood on the ceilings and the beautiful hardwood flooring,” provide the essential depth and warmth. She enhanced the autumn color palette with accents, fixtures, and furniture in reds, golds, greens, and black. The large kitchen windows frame a beautiful view of Sugarloaf Mountain, as well as the barn and pasture, home of the Goulds’ two horses.

“The kitchen, as well as the entire home, turned out to be exactly what we had pictured,” concludes Mrs. Gould.
