A silky cabinet scheme that eliminates hand pulls. A standalone pantry with shelves to the ceiling and a library ladder. A meandering rock mosaic that artfully imitates the life of a mountain stream. Our kitchen-and-bath section this fall is replete with creative collaborations between designers, masons, makers, and homeowners. Cookie-cutter rooms have been whisked far away — today’s revolutionary looks range from vintage barn wood to handle-free cabinetry.

What doesn’t change are the notions of kitchen as main living space and bathroom as coveted sanctuary. Utilitarian notions are moot when the cooking-and-eating hub has a postcard view and seating for 16, or when the chandelier in the master bath rivals the accessories of a high-end spa.

We hope you enjoy our photos and writeups featuring 17 of the region’s most enviable kitchens and baths. Consider it a prelude to our annual Asheville Kitchen + Bath Show on October 15 and 16 (See ashevillekitchenbath.com for details.) — or a handy print guide to your next life- and leisure-changing project.
