Sue Dolamore returns to the River Arts District

Hurricane Helene left Madison County watercolor artist Sue Dolamore feeling unmoored. Though her second-floor workspace in Warehouse Studios in the River Arts District escaped floodwaters, the surrounding damage was heart-wrenching. “It was devastating to see all the destruction and to know that the places and people that we love would be so very much affected,” the artist shares. Business in the months since the storm has been slower, Dolamore admits. “And that has given me time to create new work,” she says. Post-Helene, the artist has also tweaked her creative process, beginning each piece with “swiftly drawn strokes” using India ink. “I then let it dry very thoroughly, sometimes for a few days so the India ink will be cured and not as likely to run when hit with water,” she explains. “In subsequent days, I build up layers of watercolors until it gets the depth and richness that is needed for me to feel it is worthy of a signature.” On April 26, Dolamore will share a collection of new works — mostly landscapes, florals, and narrative pieces — during the grand reopening of her studio space. “[The RAD] has been a wonderful place to be,” says Dolamore. “[There’s] a strong sense of community and endless inspiration and talent to help me expand upon what I have learned, and a vigorous stream of visitors who love artists and their work.”
Sue Dolamore will reopen Studio #3 in Warehouse Studios (170 Lyman St., River Arts District, Asheville) on Saturday, April 26, 11am-5pm. See suedolamore.com.
