Blue Spiral 1 muses on the human experience

“I’m a bit like a magpie,” Asheville painter Jon Sours says when asked about his creative process. Similar to the steely-eyed corvid, Sours collects shiny glimmers of inspiration — “little bits here and there” — and tucks them away for future use. These gems are culled from the nest when he approaches the canvas, often to depict the human form. “Working with the figure gives me the opportunity to be either specific or universal, depending on what I’m after,” he says. “I’ve made portraits of real friends or models with the aim of capturing their likeness and personality, but I also enjoy working with found photographs or film stills and combining or collaging them in the hope of creating a new, fuller image.” Sours will present such paintings during Figuratively Speaking at Blue Spiral 1 in downtown. According to advance press, the exhibition will feature a broad spectrum of work, from woven photographs to drawings, that explore the “intricate facets of human experience — resilience, empathy, sexuality, confidence, mystique, and humor.” The show opens Friday, March 7.
