Serious Style

The master bath in Robert and Mercedes Carrady’s home at The Ramble is paved with glamour and gravitas — an Art Deco palette combining gray, black, and immaculate white, texturally complemented with decorative, wrought-iron accessories, including wall sconces and a chandelier. “The juxtaposition of natural stone elements with contemporary porcelains and ceramics showcases a refined mountain style,” says Amanda Meranto of Crossville Tile & Stone, who worked with Mercedes to design the space. (Instead of hiring a principal designer, the lady of the house used her own artistic talents for the project.)

Raised square sinks, situated in vanities opposite one another, form an elegant his-and-hers tableau. The black porcelain tile lining the walls and floor is from Crossville’s “Shades” collection, and the dramatic stacked-stone wall is offered by Island Stone (also sourced through Crossville). The pebble shower floor in “Antique White” (Crossville) leavens all the horizontal lines and cools the natural-stone wall outside the shower, clad in Temple Lava by Island Stone.

Silver-and-black tissue holders, while not the main points of attraction, neatly encapsulate the idea of the room: something about Old Hollywood kissing the edge of the outdoors. Appropriately for the frequently traveling Carradys, the space is not so much a bathroom as a destination.

The builder offers this take: “We strive to integrate the personality of each owner into every home we build. Mercedes’ design and style certainly made this easy. You can feel her presence and energy when you enter the door.”
