From Storm to Studio

Beaverdam artists reopen their doors for the 8th annual tour

A year ago, after Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina, Beaverdam Studio Tour organizer Karen Milnes had to make the heartbreaking call to cancel the beloved event. “Last fall, many Beaverdam Valley artists endured fallen trees, damaged studios, lost artwork, weeks without power, and 53 days without water,” says Milnes. “The emotional toll was heavy, and the 2024 studio tour had to be cancelled.” This autumn, the so-called “bounce-back tour” is slated for October 25-26 and will feature 25 artists working in ceramics, textiles, painting, jewelry, photography, wood, glass, and more. Among them is Lynne Harty, a photographer and encaustic artist who says her pieces are inspired by “beauty and nature,” both of which abound in the North Asheville neighborhood. “… The setting is pastoral, peaceful, and, aside from the birds and the crickets, sort of ‘country quiet,’” she shares. “Really, though, the biggest bonus of living here is the people. I have wonderful neighbors, with some terrific artists right nearby.”
