The Giving Things

Winter group show explores the beauty of everyday devotion
A Gentle Breeze, Gretchen Chadwick

When Hurricane Helene flooded her studio in Asheville’s River Arts District, Gretchen Chadwick had to start over, rebuilding not just her workspace, but her rhythm as an artist. Now working from her home in Weaverville, she’s found new inspiration in the landscape just beyond her door, specifically a Carnelian cherry tree. “It’s one of the first things to bloom in the spring, attracting pollinators,” Chadwick shares. “As it develops fruit, it continues to feed squirrels, birds, bears, and deer. It gives and gives, both beauty and sustenance. To me, that is love.” Her painting “Bee-topia,” an abstracted study of that tree, will appear in A Thing Called Love, a group exhibition at Re.Imagine Gallery in Fairview. Opening this February, the show explores affection in its many forms — not hearts and roses, but the small, sustaining forces that warm daily life. “This isn’t your average Valentine’s show,” the gallery promises in a press statement. “Re.Imagine — true to its name — has envisioned a show of art, wearables, and functional crafts that will warm your heart year-round.”
