Seventy-year-old houses have stories to tell. They also have quirks to address.
In this West Asheville home, one of those quirks was a too-small primary bedroom with little storage and no dedicated bathroom. The homeowners partnered with Scroggs Construction Services to expand the footprint off the back of the house, making room for a new bathroom with a double vanity, walk-in shower, and soaking tub.
“In older homes, you have to be intentional with every square foot,” says Alicia Presnell, lead interior designer with Scroggs Construction Services. “The goal here was to give them space that feels open and comfortable without losing the character of the house.”
The materials reflect that thinking. A soft gray Grigio tile from Happy Floors grounds the floor in a calm, architectural base. Matte white 3-by-12 subway tile lines the shower and tub walls, keeping the envelope classic and bright. A vertical accent of Glazzio Denim tile adds depth and a subtle note of color, drawing the eye upward and giving the shower a focal point. Matte white penny rounds introduce texture underfoot.
The double vanity is topped in Silestone Miami Vena from RockStar Marble and Granite, its understated veining adding movement to the neutral palette. Delta fixtures carry a consistent finish throughout the space, paired with an Americh soaking tub and Icera sinks.
Behind the walls, asbestos removal and complex roof framing required careful coordination, but the finished bath feels both timeless and tailored.
“It doesn’t have to be complicated to be beautiful,” Presnell says. “If the layout makes sense and the materials feel right, the room kind of speaks for itself.”
