Cozy Up

“Cozy” and “cabin” go together like “fall” and “cider” — but what’s been accomplished inside this Lake Toxaway cabin vaults that sweet notion to grandeur. The steep-pitched ceiling, anchored with heavy timber beams, recalls a church — not a cathedral so much as perhaps an august Southern meeting house. The look is royal rustic — and in revealing what it took to achieve it, cabinetry designer Holly Rogers with Appalachian Antique Hardwoods in Waynesville recites a wood palette as varied as a 64-count Crayola crayon box: “Weatherplank Brown, “Gray Barnwood,” “Pioneer Oak,” etc.

The different finishes of all those planks, ranging from raw to high gleam, beautifully complement one another and are further enriched by richly hued scatter rugs, gilt chandeliers, and other royal neutrals, including a copper tub.

Homeowner Monica Von Glahn engineered the room with unwavering vision: “I wanted to create a space using the same natural materials, or as close to those as possible, as what would have been used over 100 years ago — but with modern conveniences.” She started with architectural plans from Sand Creek Post & Beam that incorporated the various angles of a traditional barn and shed. Then, says Von Glahn, she contacted Appalachian Antique Hardwoods to help create the internal feel of soft surroundings in what she frames as an “all-wood, slightly primitive cabin.” The company was “extremely helpful, and gave me great advice about color, texture, and various patterns using the antique woods they source from various old buildings,” she reports.

The final product, says Von Glahn, “amazed me beyond what I had dreamed of … they created the atmosphere that made my little cabin in the woods come alive.”
