“My background is in the performing arts, so I have an eye for space and aesthetics, thought I am not an interior designer by trade,” says homeowner Mercedes Carraday, musing about the über-polished open kitchen in her retreat in The Ramble. (She and husband Robert, residents of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, were seeking a mountain home to be near their grown children as the latter embarked on careers in the States.) Builder Tim Wright gives top billing to architect Jim Samsel, “who created a masterpiece” of a home, he says. But Wright also acknowledges Mercedes’ undeniable flair for “personal expression” and detail. “After building several residences in other countries, experience has taught me the key to success is to put aesthetics and functionality together,” she explains. “My vision was inspired by the earth, the stone, the woods and trees of North Carolina, with a contemporary twist, a clean look … and I wanted every inch to be usable.” But first, about that seal-sleek hue … Mitch Walker with Lifestyles By Design notes that the perimeter is a custom color: translucent slate-gray stain was applied to maple on contemporary cabinetry in the frameless European style. The horizontal-grain island was quarter-sawn white oak finished with the same stain and seamless, straight-to-the-edges look. “We worked closely with Mercedes to create a design that helped her achieve her vision of color and style,” says Mitch. “She had a firm vision of what she wanted.” The homeowner adds graciously: “There’s no question that building and designing are team efforts. I am grateful to have worked with the best people in the industry who took the time to understand my vision.”
