Bright Light

The busy couple that enjoys this crisp, white-with-pops-of-pinwheel-color kitchen (inside their Ramble home) worked with Brevard’s Platt Architecture to create a space equally ideal for clandestine midnight snacks and lively dinner parties. Platt designer Celesta Thompson notes that “the give and take of the design collaboration truly made our client’s vision come to life. She really knew what she wanted.”

In this case, “must-haves” were practical work areas, plentiful storage, and a bright spaciousness. The touches of elegance don’t take themselves too seriously, and convey an easy-to-live-with graciousness. Sophisticated, hard-working features include striking Quartzite “Mystery White” countertops, an elegant island that combines an eating area with additional storage, an enviably convenient pot-filler faucet, and a custom hood that matches the cabinetry — over a workhorse Wolf range.

The bright-white aesthetic of this kitchen doesn’t sacrifice warmth, though. Platt Architecture provided plenty by prescribing wooden beams and ceiling boards that echo traditional beadboard, but are actually 1-foot by 8-foot V-jointed boards (executed by Tyner Construction). The statement-making turquoise glass chandelier, a bright-blue Le Creuset stewpot, fire-engine-red cooking utensils, and a retro KitchenAid mixer provide the visual equivalent of a Red Bull energy drink.

The kitchen shines with pristine white cabinetry and flat panel doors with an applied molding, courtesy of Mountain Showcase Group; the brushed-steel pulls from Bella Hardware & Bath are refreshingly unfussy. The artisans at Mountain Showcase fashioned the legs of the breakfast-nook table to match the cabinetry.

Light, both natural and electric, plays an important role. The traditional four-over-one windows bathe the space in sunlight, while the elegant chandelier is given the “high/low” treatment with the addition of a rubbed-bronze, steam-punk-minimal fixture. The breakfast area features a flush mounted light fixture that’s reminiscent of a Moravian star.
Adventurous clients, creative design professionals, and fine craftspeople are like a delicious combination of just-right spices: They mix well and play distinct but equally necessary roles.
