Sited on a scenic but rugged mountain road in the Flat Rock area, this home is an exercise in intention that goes far beneath the surface — although those same surfaces, including backlit onyx countertops and soft, brushed-charcoal cabinetry, contain plenty of depth on their own.
The homeowner is an art lover whose sensitivity shines through a house full of custom appointments, wrought by the double powerhouse of New Pointe Builders and New Pointe Home Design Studio. In the kitchen, the atmosphere is intuitively soft without being precious. The space’s luminous earth tones are the result of much thoughtful, almost spiritual planning, as the homeowner explains: “The design mixes elements of nature: earth in the slate floor, wood in the gray cabinetry, metal in the steel columns and appliances, and water in the flow of onyx on the counters.” A lap pool adjacent to the kitchen area enhances the aquatic symbolism in a splashier way.
Daylight is provided via the picture windows — the view spans most of downtown Hendersonville — “but in darkness, the lighting emphasizes individual spaces, and movement of air is represented in the cabinet handles,” she adds. Both of these accessories exhibit a sense of fun — small, graceful pendant lights hang everywhere, and the drawer pulls are an ornate “floating” design. Also adding to the cache of necessary luxuries is a lithe, tribal-esque sculpture (by local artist Paige Hamilton Davis) relaxing on a countertop, and an oil painting of a dog whose soulful expression dominates his niche.
These personal touches are “intended to create an inviting serenity with a hint of whimsy,” says the homeowner.
Framed another way, with all the extras considered en masse, the room itself — and indeed the whole house — can be considered a work of art.
