New talent debuts at Folk Art Center
Since 1930, the Southern Highland Craft Guild has celebrated the talent of our region. Since 1977, Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts Program has helped nurture that talent, and “… the relationship … has been beneficial to both,” says Brian Wurst, a woodworking instructor at the college. “The Guild is a marvelous avenue for students to learn about what it takes to become working craftspeople and, in turn, scores of alumni have become not just members, but also served in leadership roles.” In May, recent graduates of the Professional Crafts Program will display works in clay, fiber, jewelry, and wood in the Main Gallery at the Folk Art Center. In the Focus Gallery this spring, the Guild will present Patience Makes Perfect, a group exhibition featuring everything from calligraphy to needle felting. Valerie Berlage, curator of Guild exhibitions, says the show riffs on the painstaking patience it takes to master a craft.
