Flocking Together

The look is high-flown, thanks to homeowner Debbie Finn’s love of all things avian. In this Cliffs at Walnut Cove kitchen, graceful baroque pendants over the island appear like bird cages whose occupants have escaped to get a better look at the handsome coffered ceiling.

“The beautiful ceiling is part of the reason we selected Gabriel Builders,” says Debbie’s husband John Finn. “They have a strong feel for the proportions in their woodwork, and [project manager] Julie [Eldridge] did a good job sizing the ceiling.”

Julie also helped select the decorative tile mural (“Cucina Amaval Fruit Basket,” from Artsaics) and antique-white “Caroline” bar stools, a product of Ethan Allen of Asheville. But the painted maple cabinetry — a French Country cream shade with flush insets, mullion windows, and a Tuscan door style, designed and crafted by Mountain Showcase — is the room’s custom appointment. The perimeter sets off a rustic alder island, also made by Mountain Showcase, and stained-walnut floors.

“We wanted a pretty but practical kitchen — warm, but with open sight lines,” says John. “Julie worked with the shape of the kitchen island and the placement of the ovens to create the feel that Debbie wanted.”
