Flowing Upstream

The choice of ambrosia aka “wormy” maple in the cabinetry of this master bath invites the rest of the room to live up to that wood’s complex texture. Beautifully patterned countertops, a porcelain-wood floor (in “summer”), a porcelain-and-marble shower, and an air tub by MAAX all keep luxury in the forefront. However, it’s earthy details such as the cabinet knobs — actual river stones ordered from Skipping Stones Studio in Idaho — that maintain the mountain landscape.

Geometric backsplashes behind the main appointments are well met by a fantastic glass-tile floor mosaic that connects one appliance to the other. “The ‘riverbed’ inlay represents a stream bed flowing in and out of the tub and into the shower,” says homeowner Brantley Sudderth, who reveals that his wife Jeanne added this touch.

“The rainforest-green granite countertops encourage the feeling of being outdoors,” says Jeanne. That aura is enhanced by a clerestory window above the vanity trimmed with small pendant lights. That high view of the trees — the home is sited in Flat Rock’s Kenmure community — is appropriate for a room so deeply inspired by nature, where the angle of the faucets has nothing to do with the ultimate flow.
