The proverbial empty nest isn’t always a bad thing — sometimes it can even trigger a stylish clean slate. Such was the case with a couple in Hendersonville who decided to re-do the interior of their Champion Hills abode once their offspring left home. To say this bathroom had become outdated is a mild understatement — a colorful animal-themed mural, doubtlessly a fond memory for the family’s grownup “kids,” had definitely outlived its purpose.

“The whole bath was entirely gutted and rebuilt,” remarks Jean Greeson of Greeson & Fast Design. “The owners wanted a sophisticated, clean, and contemporary look.”

Crystalline-blue artisan glass tile from boutique company Earth Elements is set against black cabinetry for a feel that’s a little bit retro — maybe Art Deco meets Old Hollywood — and yet irreproachably modern, thanks to no-frills linear drawer pulls and other clean lines. The charcoal-colored floor tile, also from Earth Elements, features tiny squares in a look bordering on mosaic, complemented by a shower curtain in a similar pattern.

Mild wallpaper in a saltwater shade picks up the blue tile and also makes the ideal backdrop for the room’s “wow” shot — an oversized metallic-framed mirror from luxury accessories purveyor Arteriors. Polished and sleek yet robustly functional, this memorable piece is reminiscent of a cocktail serving tray from New Orleans’ Old Absinthe House (no kids allowed).
