Of Wood and Whales

Grovewood Village hosts biannual studio tour
Flicker, Melissa Engler

“We both grew up in very wild environments,” Asheville wood sculptor Melissa Engler says of herself and her husband/fellow maker Graeme Priddle. “My early years were spent in the Rockies in Canada, and Graeme is from New Zealand. Immersion in nature from an early age gave us a deep curiosity and devotion to the natural world.” Today, the couple’s individual and collaborative sculptures tell the narratives of voiceless fauna and flora, from the endangered whale shark to the threatened Kirtland’s snake. “The main area where we diverge is approach,” says Engler. “Most of Graeme’s forms begin on the lathe, whereas mine start on the bandsaw and are often assemblages of multiple pieces.” The last weekend of May, the wife and husband will open their shared studio to guests during the Bi-Annual Grovewood Village Studio Tour, a free, self-guided, explore-at-your-own-pace tour. “This is your chance to peek into the studios of our resident artists, gain insight into their creative process, and view their most recent works,” Grovewood Gallery shares.
