Reflections of a Tin Ceiling

The first thing interior designer Jennifer Scott notes about Sandi and Roy Weinberg’s kitchen is “mountain views dreams are made of.” But the scene outside the window gets some serious competition within. A dramatic, textured tin ceiling is the high point of this room in a luxury home located in The Settings of Black Mountain. “It was all Sandi’s vision,” says Jennifer. “We helped select the perfect finish and the tin molding detail on the edges for a more finished look.” The contrast here is everything: supremely peaceful white shiplap walls, a glass backsplash, open shelving, and pale marble countertops embed an upscale nautical flair, but dark reclaimed-oak floors and certain accoutrements (an antique clock, a wooden bench, the painted barn-wood bar top, the farmhouse sink) bring it back down to earth with whiffs of mountain cabin or even Early American primitive. The scalloped range hood and the custom Dutch door “suggest a storybook comparison,” says Jennifer. (Think a dreamily expanded playhouse.) “I wanted to keep the colorful coastal vibe and incorporate textures of mountain living,” explains Sandi. To this end, she says, “I utilized regional print home-and-garden magazines and drew from our previously built homes.” She also reports that she “vigilantly updated my Houzz portfolio” — proving this irony: the keenest retro looks often result from anticipating the trends of the future.
