Seeing Red

Neutrals are splendid, and certainly appropriate for the southern-mountain modern vernacular. However, a vivid interjection of color indoors acknowledges the diversity of the natural landscape, and upgrades a kitchen from “eating space” to “communication hub.”

In this Cliffs at Walnut Cove kitchen, designed by Kevin J. Smith of Packard Cabinetry in Hendersonville, a red, granite-topped, Shaker-style island supports the whole scheme, complementing dove-colored cabinetry, a glass-tile backsplash, and majestic timber accents next to the dining niche.

Homeowners are Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Gay, who reveal in a joint statement that “we are proud first-time grandparents.” Mrs. Gay goes on to say: “Between the beauty of the Asheville area, my husband’s love of golf, and our desire for a home close to our son, his wife, and their baby, we decided to build in Walnut Cove.”

The couple’s main residence is in Louisiana, although “when we retire, we hope to live in our Arden home permanently,” she adds.

A hutch behind the dining table is fitted flush to the wall on its upper tier, making a bright statement of modernity, and those silky lines come back into play in the kitchen proper, including minimally framed windows, trim fixtures, and understated LED pendant lighting.

“My husband and I like family and simplicity, and I think our kitchen and the cabinets within reflect that,” the lady of the house concludes. “The kitchen is built to be the heart of our home and a gathering place — yet the cabinets show our desire to stay close to our simple roots.”
