Folk Art Center showcases five Guild artists

When Hendersonville textile artist Barbara Jones craves adventure, she doesn’t strap on her hiking boots and bushwhack through the backcountry. Instead, she heads into the hinterland of fiber art, where fabric and thread lead her down unexpected paths. “When starting a piece, I don’t use predefined ‘blueprints’ or a set of rules,” she says. “Instead, my intuitive approach is more like me and the fiber go on an adventure.” Along the way, Jones takes detours — layering, fusing, tearing apart and rebuilding, melting, burning, painting, and stitching. “Suddenly,” she says, “a piece is taking shape.” This fall, Jones brings that spirit of exploration to Kaleidoscopic Whimsy, on view through late December in the Focus Gallery at the Folk Art Center. She’ll be joined by fellow Southern Highland Craft Guild members Betty Ann Winters (fiber), Liz Spear (textiles), Nikki Pynn (mixed media), and Cindy Sugg (clay). Together, their work celebrates curiosity as craft’s greatest compass.
