Springtime shows at Blue Spiral 1
In 1987, Louisiana native Patti Quinn Hill sold Eat No Evil, her natural-foods restaurant in New Orleans, and settled on a 23-acre farm in Weaverville. She expected to spend retirement exploring the mist-shrouded peaks and low-slung valleys of her new landscape. But then came the baskets. “Right after we moved to Weaverville, one of my new neighbors taught me how to weave the Appalachian egg basket,” Hill remembers. In the decades since, Hill has developed a distinct weaving style that uses heavyweight cotton archival paper that she paints with acrylics and then cuts into long strips. This offers a “totally different, contemporary, colorful, and fun look for art basketry,” she says. In early May, Hill will debut fresh work at Blue Spiral 1 as part of A New Leaf. This spring, the downtown venue will also present two group shows: Structure and Collection. All exhibitions run through June 25.
