Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands returns this July
A cornerstone of Appalachian craft since 1948, the biannual Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands returns to Harrah’s Cherokee Center this summer for its 78th season. First held on the grounds of Arrowmont School in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, the fair was founded to elevate the work of regional makers and preserve traditional techniques. Today, it’s one of the most esteemed craft celebrations in the country. Hosted every July and October, the event brings together more than 200 juried artisans working in clay, fiber, glass, wood, metal, paper, and other media. According to the Guild, the biannual fairs “are unique in that they offer attendees the opportunity to connect with the artists by purchasing directly from them. In an age of mass production and global imports, the connection to fine American craft and the individual maker is often lost but more significant than ever.” Tickets are $12 at the door; children under 12 enter free.
